Benefits

How to Use

Mixed Tocopherol 70% is oil soluble — add directly to the oil or butter phase; no pre-dissolving needed.

  • Cold process / melt and pour soap: Add to melted oils/butters before combining with lye (CP) or before pouring (MP), once oils have cooled slightly below 60°C
  • Lotions, balms, lip products, anhydrous formulations: Add to oil phase during cool-down, below 60°C, for best antioxidant retention
  • Bulk oil/butter preservation: Blend directly into stored oils or butters to extend shelf life before use

Recommended Usage Rates

  • Cold Process Soap: 0.5–1% of total oil weight — added to oils prior to combining with lye; primarily for DOS prevention
  • Melt and Pour Soap: 0.5–1% of total batch weight — stir into melted base once cooled slightly
  • Lotions, Creams and Body Butters: 0.5–1% of total formulation — added to oil phase during cool-down, below 60°C
  • Balms, Salves and Lip Products: 0.5–1.5% of total formulation — higher end for extended shelf-life products
  • Bulk Oil and Butter Preservation: 0.1–0.5% of total oil weight — blended directly into carrier oils/butters
  • Facial Serums and Oil Blends: 0.5–1% — added to finished oil blend
  • Hair Oils and Conditioning Treatments: 0.5–1% — blended into oil phase

Start at the lower end and increase gradually — higher doses give limited extra antioxidant benefit for added cost.

FAQs

Questions

What is the INCI name for Mixed Tocopherol 70%?
Tocopherol. Mixed Tocopherols, Vitamin E, and Vitamin E Oil are common trade names. This is the name to use on your cosmetic product ingredient list.

Is Vitamin E oil soluble or water soluble?
Oil soluble and insoluble in water. Add directly to the oil/butter phase — no pre-dissolving or emulsifying required.

Why do soap makers use Vitamin E?
Primarily as a natural antioxidant to slow oxidation and prevent DOS (dreaded orange spots), extending the shelf life of finished soap bars. It also contributes a skin-conditioning benefit to the finished bar.

Does Vitamin E act as a preservative for water-based products?
No — it is an oil-phase antioxidant only, not a broad-spectrum preservative. Water-containing products need a separate cosmetic preservative (such as Optiphen Plus, Phenoxyethanol, or Liquid Germall Plus) in addition to Vitamin E.

Can Vitamin E be used in leave-on skincare as well as soap?
Yes — widely valued in lotions, balms, facial oils, and hair treatments for skin-conditioning and emollient properties alongside its antioxidant function.
