What is Polyquaternium-7 used for?
It is a cationic conditioning polymer used in shampoos, conditioners, body washes, facial cleansers, and some skin care products to add slip, softness, foam quality, and easier combing.
What usage rate should I start with?
Start at 1% as supplied in shampoos and body washes. Use 1–5% as supplied depending on how much conditioning you want. Higher levels give more slip, but can feel coated if overused.
Do I add it to the oil phase or water phase?
Add it to the water phase. It is water soluble and does not need to be melted.
Will it make my shampoo cloudy?
Polyquaternium-7 is commonly chosen because it has good compatibility and clarity in anionic surfactant systems compared with some other cationic conditioners.
Can I use it in soap or shampoo bars?
It is designed for water-based formulas. It can be used in liquid shampoos, conditioners, and washes. It is not a substitute for BTMS or other solid conditioners in anhydrous bars.
Does it need a preservative in my formula?
Yes. This is a water-containing ingredient. Any finished water-based product you make with it still needs a suitable preservative system.
